The French government wants Apple to modify iTunes so that music can be downloaded onto mp3 players other than Apple's iPod. This has some really interesting implications for DRM. It means that it will be illegal to stop people from transferring content from one device to another, from one format to another.

I am looking forward to seeing where this goes. The fundamental issue, I believe, is that DRM is absolutely meaningless except as a theoritical proposition in the minds of corporations. As long as people can digitize content that is pre-DRM into readily transportable files such as mp3, or ogg-vorbis etc, Bit Torrent will do the rest and create a super distribution of that which is popular.... The only thing that the content companies can do is to infiltrate the free networks with mal content. Which of course they are doing....
