Podcasts - Discretionary Mindshare
Over the last two months I have become an avid consumer of podcasts.
And the thing that occurred to me last night is that one aspect of this is the opportunity for the podcaster to be welcome in the user's mind - in the most visceral way. You have about 72 discretionary hours available to you each week outside of work or school and sleep. If you invite a podcast into your brain for one hour a week you are giving up over 1% of your time to someone else... And that time is irreplacable, unlike the money you earn, invest, etc. This is discretionary mindshare, much more important now than discretionary income. Why? Because money is replacable. Time isn't ever/ I have blogged before about John Furrier's Podnet series. If you like jazz guitar, have a listen to No Idle Frets. Worth the 1%.

Nick at Frets has three hundred people who subscribe to him via RSS feed; that's a very high number given the overall size of his audience. It shows that a narrow but deep niche, in this case jazz guitar, can command strong loyalty amongst listeners in podcasts. His number sill grow however as more people find him over time.
