Very
interesting story from the BBC about iPod music downloading/ripping/purchasing habits.
It probably isn't a surprise to Steve Jobs but it appears that people who buy iPods don't tend to start purchasing music from iTunes.
Here are some of the salient points:
On average, only 20 of the tracks on a iPod will be from the iTunes shop
More important to iPod owners, said the study, was
free music ripped from CDs someone already owned or acquired from
file-sharing sites.
During 2006 Europeans will spend more
than 385m euros (£260m) on digital music - mostly with iTunes
83% of iPod owners do not buy digital music regularly
5% of the music on
an iPod is from online music store
"Digital music purchasing has not yet fundamentally
changed the way in which digital music customers buy music," read the
report.
In light of the recent announcement about movie downloads, one has to wonder whether this will change anything in the domestic movie business...
