Coming Soon – An Interview With The Australian Pirate Party
We will be publishing an interview with one of the organizers of the Australian Pirate Party in the next few days, all being well. So stay tuned to find out what they plan to do at the next election and what their policies are and how they intend to avoid being beaten by the content industry.
I am looking forward to hearing about their efforts…
And by the way I was contacted by the Greens too. I think that they are possibly a lost cause in this country, which is a shame, because I am an unashamed greenie.
However, there is no clearly enunciated strategy with them other than that they raise money when there is an election and they try to be successful at getting people elected so they can influence things… Whoa! that ain't no road map for success…
Pity too because in the area where I live, there is one issue that I think could unify people tremendously. So I wrote to one of the Greens committee members to share my thoughts…
Here is, in part, what I said:
If you believe that Climate Change is real (some don't) you may also believe that there is a danger of rising water levels.
In the Shoalhaven only a small rise in sea level, combined with tidal
surge would cause substantial community dislocation. You can check for
your self what the impact would be by going to http://flood.firetree.net/?ll=
I have attached a jpeg of the map showing inundation at 2 metres to make it easier for you to see.
To
me this kind of publicly available information is the kind of central
tactical approach to trade into empirical evidence and a community
concern to provide vision and strategy at the local council. Instead of
being the knee-jerk responders to everything that moves, there would be
a potential to create a strong unifying community support for a set of
plans – starting with a council disaster plan (maybe there already is
one in place) that focuses on this future scenario. Then from that very
local approach the Greens presence would be able to show that it can be
focused on a key community issue that has a strong scientific rationale
and work with that. This would lead to taking ads to grow presence for
the message. This would need funds to be raised to carry the meme
forward. (A meme is an “idea virus” by the way. It is a word created by
Richard Dawkins).
I presume you are getting my drift….
If you disagree, as
well you might, because you may have a dozen or so other things that
are of great importance to various individuals in your committee…
However, I think that by taking this one central theme and working with
it as your primary initial tactical goal, you would find that you could
grow interest in the theme or the meme, which would lead to fund
raising opportunities, which would almost certainly involve building
community contributions in the form of hours worked, web sites built,
leaflets printed and handed out, and that would help you build
membership.
All of this by the way is why you need a strategic plan.
You need a unifying highly emotional target that will cause involvement and engagement from the community.
It
was Ben Franklin who said, “Tell me and will forget. Show me and I
might remember. Involve me and I will understand”. You want to do
outreach. This is how you do it.
Look forward to hearing from you.
