P2P Trends
You may be familiar with Google Trends. Tom reminded me of it earlier today and gave me a fascinating tour into possibility with regard to some aspects of the profile of the downloader in Australia using this Google tool.
Just forget for the moment which movie or song was the big hit last week based on P2P. Let's go back in time and look at the cumulative numbers over many years….
Here is what the trend line looks like for torrent downloads over the long term.

Now Google always gives good information and this chart is no different.
This shows the trend relating to torrents over time. You can check for yourself.
Note in the bottom right hand side of the picture the number 1, 2 and 3 cities for torrents…. #1 is a town called Craigieburn….. huh? What could be happening in Craigieburn, a town with a population of 19,728 that could cause it to show up more Torrent use than Sydney, or Melbourne or Adelaide or….
I find the question really fascinating…
And on a different but related topic, you may be interested to know what is happening in Spain with regard to P2P:
The government had told the music industry and the ISP's to get together and play nicely for a while and try to come up with a formal solution for downloads. Apparently the ISP's got up and walked out of the negotiations… The reason given was that the content companies wanted to maintain the “three strikes and your out” rules in Spain. The ISP's on the other hand, wanted the government to require that the music industry offer a new business model for downloads that would include the ISP's.
So how does Craigieburn and Spain fit together?
In Australia we are in a geography where, because of that and the way that the Internet functions, there is a real possibility to figure out a business model that works for content owners and works for consumers.
We will be releasing some of that information over the coming weeks. (Sorry this is a tease, but you will just have to come back if you want to find out more…. or call us…)
