Armchair Activism

Pew just released a report (17th Jan) that shows that in the US there has been a huge surge in online activism. some 23% of people in the US created blogs or forwarded political commentary about issues or candidates in the recent US elections.

This seems to reveal two interesting – and not surprising – trends.

One is that people are starting to get involved in issues and care (“I cant take this any more”)

And the other is that they are able to do it from the comfort of their own home. Is this about ease of use or is it about not wanting to actually have to do the tough part of the demonstration or march or whatever – i.e. show up?!

There is no doubt that in Australia Get Up is creating a lot of synchronized and focused political activity focused on doing what Don Chipp did for so many years with the Dems in Australia – “Keep the bastards honest”.
