Businesses and Business Modeal
This is for those people who read this blog who are familiar with our clients – and with one side of this story.
Earlier this year a client asked me to write a business plan for a potential Web 2.0 business for them that would be an extension of their current business. Over the next couple of months I did extensive research and developed a very detailed business plan.
There was a management change in the company and the incoming new head of marketing decided that the plan didn't suit him. So it didn't move forward.
Earlier this week I was in a meeting with the senior marketing people at one of the largest mobile phone carriers in the world and talking about a potential deal….. Can you imagine my surprise when they described a business that they would like someone to bring to them that was an almost exact description of the business that I had proposed to the client?!
The thing that is amazing in some large companies whose business riches came from old business models is that even incoming marketing honchos think that by following the old, tried and tested way of doing things, that new riches will be discovered…..
Fresh is fresh. And companies that hire new people for stale ideas are going to get stale results. It is not easy to make changes in business. But sometimes the best possible option in business is to 'cut and run' and look for a new way of achieving success… And that means that you have to be prepared to listen to the market, even if it may mean competing with your customer….
