The Economics Of Abundance

Chris Anderson has a new meme. Hot on the heels of The Long Tail, he is now talking about the Economics of Abundance.

In reality it is pretty much an extension of the Long Tail hypothesis, but as a meme, it may catch on faster and build its own momentum as noted in this comment.

Chris also has a ppt deck from a recent conference at the link above which adds more weight to the argument.

I think that one of the more significant thoughts on this topic is that as there is an abundance of media and digitized content our attention for that content decreases. This is abetted by the fact that there is so much content to sift through.

Which leads to the proposition that we now need intelligent DJ's – or DCJ's for Digital Content Jockeys – to sift through the mass of content and present us with only that which is relevant to us individually. So tags should help that, particularly the addition of tags by consumers of the content. A kind of Wisdom of Crowds approach. But surely we need to automate the process quite significantly – have an automated and formalized approach to reading the metadata and providing a way to parse the content faster so that we can make decisions on what content we are going to invest the scant minutes we have in…
