A Day In Napa

I spent an interesting and stimulating day yesterday in Napa – a day in the country is something I rarely get to do. (One highlight was the Darioush winery – excellent Viognier!)

Some of the other people on the trip were from the IP divisions of Sony, Fraunhofer, Samsung and France Telecom. We didn't talk about anything that required an NDA. But one of the things that frankly surprised me was that, as people representing the future of technology, they hadn't read Ray Kurzweil's book, “The Singularity is Near”.

When you think about how technology impacts all of us, and you consider that the people who are driving the way that the technology is implemented are not the engineers, but the patent attorneys, and that they are not considering the views of the technologists who ARE looking into the future, you have to be somewhat concerned, don't you?
