How The Web Was Won

Where is the web going..? Ok – so there is a lot of virtual ink continuing to be used to talk about where Web 2.0 is going, who is and who isn't Web 2.0, and whether the bubble will burst – and even if there is a bubble!

Trying to get to the heart of it, I have read a couple of pieces this morning that go straight to the heart of it for me.

Here is the Jeff Jarvis take on Google Base:

The key question for any company today is: How do you play in the
distributed world? How do you stop the 1.0 insistence of having to
control and own and how do you instead make money by enabling others?
That was where Google’s own gigantic growth was. But sometimes it’s
hardest to learn the lessons you yourself teach.

Worth reading in its entirety and for the links!

… and then Fred Wilson had this to say:

I believe that the value in any network is created on the edge.

That's where my blog sits.  That's where Gotham Gal blog sits.  That's where Ted's Blog sits.

That is not where Google Base sits.  Google Base is in the center.

In the freebase  model you give your content to Google and they keep it.

In the myspace model, you create your content on your page and you keep it.

Again important to go to the original to read the whole and visit the links.

For anyone playing in the social media space this information is quite critical, not just to get funded, but to become successful too. The world is a truly competitive place and getting more so day by day!
