I saw an ad today in the Sydney Morning Herald for the Altech Maestro. It promises full DVR capabilities with HDD together with the ability to burn HD content to Blu-ray plus internet access etc etc….

Sounds great. But what I am hearing out of Hollywood seems to indicate that the big studios are expecting the game changer to be small not big.

The new “real” video iPod is anticipated to be launched in time to be the big Christmas product this year – that is the one which has a screen the full size of the device…. This is the thing that the studios are anticipating and working as hard as they can to get on top of.

Studios don't care about what the format is. They just want to sell the product. If the people want downloads, that is what they will have.

Another tipping point is coming very fast, it seems. The vast amount of money that has been invested in HD DVD and BluRay may turn out to have been wasted….

My expectation is that the optical disk will be still born.
