The Trap Of The USP
I was at an all day corporate offsite with a client yesterday.
Eight people in a room discussion various issues relating to strategic direction of a multinational company.
Surprising thing to me that should on reflection not be surprising: Only 2 people in the room visited blogs. Both of those had blogs themselves!
Concerning thing: People kept talking about chasing profits rather than talking about how to generate more satisfied customers.
And this is a company that has been enjoying huge windfall profits for years from a market that has no choice but to take what they sell. It has produced a marketplace full of customers that do not thank them, but resent them as “tax collectors”. This is a company that had a wonderful USP, but forgot that you are better off with a unique buying proposition than a unique selling proposition.
