Warners, Bit Torrent and what "Free" is

Announced that Warners have cut a deal with Bit Torrent.

As they say in the article in the SF Chronicle, people are used to free so they have to figure what the trade off is to keep the delivery of content “free”.

These days “free” is a metaphor for “advertising supported”. So in that environment the question is going to be – what is the break point for consumers in terms of consuming ads? Or for that matter having some level of assurance that the file they are downloading is going to be virus free? Or is going to not be corrupted in some way?

And of course Bit Torrent has a dreadful interface at present… so when will it be at the same level of simplicity as skype?

We are running down a really interesting path here. Embracing everything that is free as fast as we can without any recognition that it has to be paid for. But how can you argue with the trend. Just like the addiction to oil, the whole of the western world is now addicted to free software, services etc on line. Who can argue with the tsunami of public opinion?
