More information on the growth of advertising online comes from eMarketer.

Media expects total spending on blog, podcast and RSS advertising to
grow at a compound annual rate of 106.1% from 2005 to 2010, reaching
$757.0 million in 2010. By comparison, the firm projects that other
overall alternative media, including branded entertainment, digital
out-of-home advertising, mobile marketing and video-on-demand
marketing, will grow at a compound annual rate of 14.8% and reach
$253.7 billion in 2010.

This is of course way more conservative than the figures expressed in my other post below. But nevertheless when you think about the massive consumer shift from traditional media, such as TV and newpapers, you have to figure this is the only real game in town.
And by the way how many times in a generation have you seen a product name define a genre in the way that the iPod has given its name to “podcasting”?
