Selling & Marketing Successfully

Seth Godin had a nice post continuing his “Flipping the Funnel” concept:

More and more, organizations are discovering that making something
virusworthy is the single most important step in the work they do.

I think that this is great but for many people it needs to be more fundamental than this:

What is really necessary for people is to stop trying to sell things. Instead it is important to start understanding what your customers really need, not what you think or assume they need and giving them the data that proves the premise. This is what creates the pull that you need, and means that people spread the news about you and your product or service to each other. I see the need for this granularity of understanding almost every day when I talk to start up companies that are constantly trying to 'sell' me on their ideas. They don't need to sell me. I want to buy. But I need to understand why I want to buy!
