Ads In Podcasts
I have been subscribing to the No Idle Frets podcast pretty much since it began. Some of the podcasts are great. Some not so…. but a really nice amateur production from someone who clearly is a big jazz guitar fan – a guy by the name of Nik Carver.
I got to listen to the latest yesterday evening. And lo and behold it started with an ad.
Not the sort of sponsorship ad that you get on NPR podcasts that say, “brought to you by Lexus dealers of Southern California”. No this was a big, brassy, in your face ad that sounded like AM radio in the 70’s. It was so out of character with the program it was scary. And totally forgettable.
At first I was kind of shocked by the whole thing. But I realize that Nik Carver wants to pay his bills and maybe make a buck, and he did do a deal with Adam Curry a few months ago….. and that is fine. I am all in favour of capitalism.
But the total mismatch of ad to program! Wow…. Then this must be the Adam Curry business model that enabled him to get several millions of dollars of VC funding….. Interruptive and offensive old style advertising! Back to the future…..?
I quite like the nice friendly sponsorship message at the beginning of On The Media or Harry Shearer’s program… even though I am not in the market for a Lexus or a Honda or whatever car they have been spruiking ever since I have been subscribing to those shows…
I am looking forward to someone getting their act together in the podcast ad department and targeting ads to me (and others) that are googleized – personalized to what I am in the market for right now….
