Katie Couric; the bellwether of an industry.
Katie Couric is being touted for the CBS evening news job. It's the same seat Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather enjoyed. The pulpit that could sway a nation. Of course, that was all back when there were three networks and only a handful of local television stations.
It's an interesting decision. Evening news isn't what it was. Morning shows make the money. Mornings are where Americans consume live television today. Where and when you have to learn, right now, about weather, traffic or events that shape your life, right now.
Evenings are about time shifting. Place shifting. Portable media. By evening the internet has transmitted a day's news efficiently. Evening news is no longer an absolutely necessary part of daily life. As it once was.
Couric wants to be big. To be a TV brand. Morning has a guaranteed audience. Evening doesn't. Further, is a news anchor still “big”, “relevant”? Question. Name the current NBC or CBS evening anchor? See.
Morning TV, however goofy, is connected to life today. We need what is offered. Night is down. Morning up. Want Big? Stick with mornings Katie.
