Marketing on Mobile Phones

Interesting to see the data that is coming out about marketing to mobile phones.

Projected expenditure on marketing/advertising over wireless networks (according to Visiongain) may go to $602 million in 2009, from $104 million in 2005. RBC Capital reckons it will reach $1.5 Billion by 2010.

Verizon are projecting that mobile advertising will get 25% + of the total brand marketing spend in the US which is approx $100 billion. This data is from link.

Meanwhile I was talking to Rainer Kurz last week. (He is an ex- MacKinsey guy – now has his own consultanting business specializing in telco sector). He  told me that the difference in costs for communications from country to country is staggering. In Germany for instance mobile phone charges are less than wi-fi hotspot charges, and he now uses his mobile phone to log on for emails rather than going to an internet cafe or wi-fi hotspot. This leads him to believe that there will be a potential marketplace for comms that will emerge, enabiling people to find the best price solution for whatever they need from territory to territory, moment to moment, and also a strong likelihood of significant decreases in costs as communications becomes more commoditized.
