America is Different
I just finished reading “DC Confidential”, the book by Chris Meyer, the
recently retired UK Ambassador to the US. At one point he talks about
the difference in the way that kids are educated there. Self confidence
is one of the key ingredients of the education system. And the more
time I spend there, ironically, the more differences I see. That old
phrase about not assuming too much about understanding our respective
cultures just because we have a common language is so true….
I also wonder whether there is a natural limit on size and capability
to manage. America is so vast now, in terms of what it must require to
manage, that I wonder how it will be possible to manage such a large
enterprise as it grows in complexity exponentially.
Because it, like all societies, is not made up of a mass market in the
center. It is actually made up of an almost infinite set of micro niche
markets, that are becoming more deeply seated in their own groove,
ironically as a result of the Internet. Think of it: No mass market any
more. Instead mass individualism.
