2006. Year of the Phone
2006 will be the year the cellphone becomes “the” big device.
Smartphones grew 75% from Q3, 04 to Q3, 05. Handheld fell 18%. 33
million smartphone and handheld will ship in2006. Nokia owns over 54 %
of the phone market. 130 million Americans have a camera phone.
Put this together. Suddenly the content guys all want to target
the phone to receive messages, text, data, pictures, podcasts, music,
video and then play games. They have all realized; everyone has a
phone. Perhaps a light went on; lets use this distribution
platform. It's everywhere.
Hence, the more the phone can do; the more the phone will be asked
to do. Like shopping. Like storing value card, ie replacing money.
Like being a credit card elsewhere. And just around the
corner; routine cellphone TV.
