Microsoft's huge new idea
Microsoft has been accused of being out of touch.
SSE says they aren't. Understand this. Feeds of information, big and small, are going to be the basis of the internet, and our information flow, from here onwards.
Today, RSS allows subscribers to create a link to a piece of content, a website, a blog, video, podcast, tiny chunk of data, whatever, and be automatically notified or updated whenever there's a change. example, My Yahoo is built on Feeds or RSS.
Now, Microsoft has announced Simple Sharing Extensions. SSE is a two way RSS. It means subscriber, and subscription are linked. say, my calender and yours. But that's a basic application. Its been released under Creative Commons. Anyone can work on it.
Clearly, Microsoft are betting that they can introduce this idea, get the web community excited about it, which they are, and have concepts implemented in products before anyone else.Office 12, Vista comes out next year. Watch for lots of SSE in there. Watch for VC's to embrace new companies built using the idea.
Data becomes dynamic. In real time, my data talks to yours, synchronizes and gives me a totally fresh, updated presentation.
RSS, and now SSE, is one of those ideas that have great impact in the short term but in the long term are transformative.
This is a big idea.
