Skype and Corporate
There have been a lot of stories recently about Skype – with security
flaws leading the pack. There has been a software revision released. It
seems since then that I have had more crashes. But these day who knows
why?
More interesting is the increase in corporate users that I have
noticed. People who I deal with in a variety of companies are signing
up. Find myself on line and suddenly getting a dialogue box – “John Doe
wants you to give him permission to see you when you are on line”.
Meanwhile I know that the heads of IT in the same companies are trying
to get rules in place to keep Skype out of the network. I heard one
such story last night from a senior executive at a big company who had
heard the arguments from IT about not using Skype in the company
because of the potential for security issues, His argument against was
that it is already too late. Itis like Napster all over again. A
totally viral application, a cool brand – spreading like wildfire. That
is what happens when you you get a product that enables free
information flow between people. Because Skype is a social networking
accelerator that just won't be stopped.
