Mash it, Mash it good
Ever heard of mash-ups?
Mash ups take digital samples of various pieces of content and put them
together to create a new work. One that was absolutely brilliant that I
heard recently was done by an audio performance artist in Sydney,
Australia and created a soundscape of John Lennon's “Imagine” but with
samples of George W Bush's voice doing the lyrics. Amazingly ironic
piece of musical and political commentary.
Where will mash-ups go next?
Imagine if you will using the technology on your PC to do something
similar with vision. Of course people are already doing this kind of
thing with politially satirical pieces on line. But imagine doing this
with short pieces of entertainment – famous lines from famous movie
stars together with you in a greetings card, with you in a mobile phone
video message that you can send to your friends. Imagine if you could
take all the individual news items from all the TV news programs and
create your own aggregated video pod cast of the news as you see it and
make it available by RSS feed to your friends. All this is available
right now. When it starts to be used more who will we prefer to watch -
the mainstream media or the mediated blog/pod cast news?
